Investor Relations: Who Needs IR If You Have Davey Day Trader?

If you consume FinTwit or are in Investor Relations you know there are a few items driving the current narrative: 1.) Passive investing dominates 2.) Davey Day Trader and stock cheerleading is pervasive 3.) SaaS seems to be the only thing to own, and 4.) Stocks only go up! Executives can take IR in any direction they please, but must be advised that significant pain may be associated with their decision. Today's environment seems to de-value the IR role. Many seem to believe IR is nothing more than a quick check-in during proxy voting season. The value of IR revolves around building relationships and managing downside risk among several other value creating skills. If everyday represents a referendum on a public company executive's tenure, then IR is the tool to leverage to ensure you have a long tenure.
