Investor Meetings
An important aspect of being a public company involves regularly scheduling investor meetings.
These meetings can be simple 1x1s, part of a non-deal roadshow (NDR), or an investor conference, among other settings.
The key philosophy around these meetings is simple: Do not waste Management or Investor time!
Preparation represents a significant lift for most executives.
Executives focus on running a business, not memorizing a bulleted list of high points about their company. Hence, Q&A preparation can represent a thorough-going process.
Sell-Side Research Analysts know the business like the back of their hand. They know the high points of their investment thesis and discuss these points regularly.
Executives need more time and preparation as they are focused on execution of the said business.
Investor Relations communicates executive performance around business execution to the Investor community in their language.
The goal is to guard against three common pitfalls associated with investor meetings:
1. Are the Right Investors in Your Meeting?
2. Are Investors Asking Meaningful / Good Questions?
3. Does Management Come Away Feeling Ambushed?
All of these pitfalls can easily be avoided by having a strong and engaging Investor Relations or Strategic Finance professional.
A great IRO will ensure that the right investors are in attendance. Simply, IR and or management has met with them at least once prior to the meeting.
An initial dialogue with the investor will lead to more engaging and insightful questions when management gets to that 1x1. Time is not wasted.
Lastly, if IR has done some prep work, then the possibility of ambush decreases in two ways:
1. Avoids Investors with an Agenda Poisoning the Group
2. Avoids Creating Wolfpacks That Relentlessly Ask the Same Question in a Different Way
Investor meetings are immensely valuable. Make sure you take the time to do proper preparation and have a great IRO to help you navigate these relationships.
