Track Record and Investor Relations
“You are what your record says you are.” Bill Parcels
Whether you are playing a sport or executing on best-in-class Investor Relations, the arbiter of success will be your track record.
A track record tells an outsider a lot about a particular athlete, team, Investor Relations Officer, or Company.
The hallmarks of success are typically consistency, execution, and discipline.
The hallmarks of failure are typically inconsistency, and lack of execution.
Sometimes success is learned and earned over several experiences, jobs, or opportunities.
What Was Sergei Bobrovsky’s Track Record?
The Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup primarily due to the performance of Sergei Bobrovsky and his ability to shutdown Edmonton in each of Florida’s four wins in the Stanley Cup Final.
For the casual hockey fan, one may be thinking who is this Bobrovsky guy?! I had no idea how good he was!
Let’s look at “Bob’s” track record:
Traded by Philadelphia to Columbus in 2012, for a bag of hockey pucks.
He spends seven overlooked years in Columbus.
Wins the Vezina Trophy twice with save percentages above 0.930 and GAA around 2.00.
Career 0.587 winning percentage, placing him comfortably above many all-time great goalies.
Sergei Bobrovsky is who his record says he is, a Stanley Cup winning future HOF goalie.

What determines a track record in Investor Relations?
Here are some key stats one can use to judge track record
Unlocking Shareholder Value:
Has the IRO unlocked shareholder value before?
How many times / programs has he or she unlocked shareholder value?
How difficult was the situation surrounding the unlocking of shareholder value?
The more difficult the situation > the greater the IRO’s accomplishment

What percentage of shareholder votes does the IRO + Corporate Governance team obtain for M&A?
How many times / programs has the IRO obtained these votes?
Investor Interaction Statistics:
How much of the investor base does the IRO interact with over a given period?
How many investor interactions does the IRO do in a week / month / quarter / year?
Awards:
Has the IRO won any awards like Institutional Investor or IR Magazine?
Ultimately, the best IROs are able to replicate performance and execution along these statistics across several IR programs and several industries.
